White porcelain Guanyin
White porcelain sculpture depicting Guanyin, Bodhisattva of Compassion, standing on a base of waves with a sea creature
The figure represents Guanyin, the Chinese Buddhist deity of Compassion, recognizable by her serene attitude, flowing drapery, long necklaces, and the lotus and rosary held in her hands. Here she is depicted in her marine version. The base, agitated by waves, and the dragon-fish on which she stands, recall the theme of the "Guanyin of the Sea," protector of sailors and capable of calming the waters, that is, taming dangerous situations and transforming obstacles and dangers into safe passages. In this form, she is invoked for protection during voyages, salvation from shipwreck, and help and benevolence during moments of great emotional or existential crisis, metaphorically compared to a stormy sea.
