Byōbu Chrysanthemums and Stream
Six-panel Byōbu
Kiku-ni-Nagare with chrysanthemums, birds and stream on a gold leaf background.
The screen features a large spring scene that extends continuously across all six panels. The visual focal point is a majestic cherry tree in bloom, with a powerful and sinuous trunk, occupying the right side of the composition and extending its branches towards the center and left. The gold leaf background creates a luminous and ethereal surface, designed to amplify the internal light and transform the artwork into an architectural as well as pictorial presence.
In the left half, emerging rocks, a dark body of water, and small floral groups appear, while a constellation of birds enlivens the entire space with accents of movement and lightness. The balance between the large golden void, the stylized clouds at the base, and the central arboreal structure reveals a highly decorative composition, consistent with the aesthetic of prestigious Edo period byōbu.
