Patinated and gilt bronze tripod censer
Tripod censer with lid, monumental with an oriental flair.
The piece has a monumental and symmetrical design, constructed on an ovoid body that tapers downwards, resting on three robust zoomorphic feet, and completed by a truncated cone lid with a small animal finial. The side handles, modeled as elegant golden phoenixes with long flowing plumage, give a strong vertical impetus and accentuate the dramatic character of the ensemble. The bronze surface is entirely worked with a dense pattern of archaizing geometric motifs, spirals, and figurative reliefs. A large medallion with a fantastic creature within a reserve animated by clouds stands out on the belly, while the rim of the lid and the base feature ornamental registers with small animals and archaic revival motifs.
