Painting on rice paper: Benkei and Yoshitsune on Gojo Bridge
Painting depicting Benkei and Yoshitsune on Gojo Bridge.
The work presents a scene of great narrative intensity, built around the dominant figure of the warrior monk Benkei in armor, caught in an energetic pose with his sword raised. Beside him appears the young samurai Yoshitsune, the protagonist of the legendary episode set on Gojo Bridge in Kyoto. Benkei was a warrior monk famous for his strength, who, according to legend, stationed himself on Gojo Bridge in Kyoto, challenging all armed passers-by to take their swords. After accumulating dozens of weapons, one night he clashed with a young samurai, Minamoto no Yoshitsune, who, despite his slender appearance, defeated him thanks to extraordinary agility and technique. Impressed by such superiority, Benkei recognized Yoshitsune as his lord, swore loyalty to him, and became his most trusted companion-in-arms, accompanying him in subsequent military exploits and transforming the pair into one of the most celebrated heroic symbols of Japanese tradition.
The surface of the painting shows a warm, golden background, now marked by time, which enhances the contrast with the dark armor, the reds of the clothes, and the green inserts. The composition is further characterized by the presence of inscriptions and seals, elements that reinforce the refined and figurative nature of the painting.
