Pair of Byōbu Take-ni-Suzume
Pair of three-panel Byōbu screens Take-ni-Suzume
The pair of screens features a dense bamboo grove rising from the lower edge and developing diagonally upwards, articulating green and yellow-brown culms with thick foliage. Numerous sparrows move across this natural scene, depicted with attention to the movements of flight and distributed to create a dynamic rhythm across the entire golden surface.
In the second panel, the base is occupied by a green island with blooming peonies and a wide expanse of deep blue water, which expands the iconographic register and suggests an ideal garden.
The composition utilizes large areas of golden emptiness to highlight the bamboo's diagonal and the swarming of the birds, following the principle of ma, the significant void, typical of Japanese decorative painting.
