Byōbu with festive scenes in Miyajima
Byōbu (屏風) six-panel screen with festive scenes in Miyajima, Itsukushima Shrine and landscape views
The screen depicts a continuous sequence of episodes set in Miyajima, a small sacred island near Hiroshima, with architecture, bridges, boats, waterways, and groups of figures captured in moments of travel and gathering. The narrative unfolds through sinuous bands that separate the various scenic nuclei and organize the reading horizontally.
In the second panel from the right, the famous torii gate of Itsukushima Shrine appears, an element that allows for a more precise identification of the setting. The whole seems to evoke a festive day or a public celebration, distributed across various locations on the island and rendered through an idealized view, yet rich in details of daily life.
